Industrial Capitalism Comes to Southern Appalachia The...

Industrial capitalism comes to Southern Appalachia 1860-1940: The effects on society and religion Appalachia has long been regarded as a place of natural beauty and allegedly backwards people. In one of the early attempts to civilize rural Appalachia, the population was characterized as consisting of agricultural savages who refused to learn better farming practices (Anglin 2002: 565). The poverty and environmental abuse I witnessed there were not simply a failure of economics. It went much deeper than that; hence our continual failure to social engineer meaningful changes there. It was a poverty of the spirit; a poverty of the soul said one observer, of the attempt to encourage rural Appalachians to adopt modern farming practices at the turn of the 20th century (Anglin 2002: 565-566). Other than subsistence farming, the only other predominant industry in rural Appalachia is the coal industry. Rather than provide a potential source of enrichment to the region, this too has been seen as impoverishing, rather than sustaining the residents. Appalachia has become virtually synonymous with coal and problems of the notoriously dangerous, cyclically unstable, and highly competitive industry (Pudup 1990: 61). Historically, the origins of settlements in Southern Appalachia were not so unpromising. Attracted by plentiful game, local availability of precious resources like salt, and fertile and relatively cheap land, settlers in southeast Kentucky differed little

Social Medi A New Diverse Culture Of Communication

Social media has created a new, diverse culture of communication. The internet has expanded tremendously and social media has grown to 2.206 Billion active users. Social Media allows society to manipulate how friends, colleagues, and acquaintances perceive their identity. Identity can be defined as characteristics relating to who they are. In 2015 young, older adults, and teens are inclined to find their identity through social media outlets like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, Youtube, and more. An internet persona is a social identity that internet users develop in online communities, websites, and social media websites. This identity may be constructed by oneself in order to present themselves in a different manner. Websites like Youtube constantly have anonymous users. Social media sites like Facebook and Instagram typically have your name and a comprehensive list of data about you. Online identity can determine a user’s relationship to social groups they support. Moreover, some identities can be deceptive. In 2002 Friendster was the first social networking site where people could communicate, post photos, and share content. Currently, there are almost 600 social media sites. In some ways social media can be positive by assisting in connecting with old friends. In 2015, the majority of the world has invested so much time into social media it is hard to believe at some point it didn’t exist. Business Economics Transforming Modern Macroeconomics

Question: Discuss about the Business Economics for Transforming Modern Macroeconomics? Answer: Introduction: The stringent concern of the report is to analyze the understandings of business. The structural framework of a business can be explained with the help of economic theories. Here in this report a microeconomic and a macroeconomic theory have been selected in order to explain the underlying facts of the business structure. It is necessary to note that the profitability and operability of a business structure can also be explained with the help of these economic concepts. Here, as the microeconomic theory, the theory of monopoly market has been selected while on the other hand the IS-LM model has been selected as the macroeconomic theory. The theory of monopoly market is efficient enough to address the structure and operability of a particular market structure. IS-LM model on the other hand, can explain the major macroeconomic factors that influence the macro economic factors of the economy. Microeconomic theory: In this portfolio, the theory of monopoly market is selected as the microeconomic theory. A monopoly market is defined as the market where there is a large number of a buyer but a single seller (Rubinfeld and Pindyck 2012). Causes of monopoly: There are a number of causes that may give rise to monopoly market. These causes are explained briefly below, When a firm owns the exclusive rights of a scarce resource then it is quite evident that it will be the only firm to produce by using the resource as input. For example, Microsoft is the owner of Windows operating system; therefore, the firm can exploit this resource, as it possesses a monopoly power over this resource. Sometimes, the government of a particular country may grant monopoly power to a specific firm. For example in some countries, only the government and some government granted companies could produce arms and ammunitions (Fishback 2013). The producers of particular product may own patent rights over the design or may own copyright regarding the ideas, images or the names that are associated with the product. The monopoly market is based on the following assumptions, There is a single seller in the market selling the entire output. Therefore, the seller is the price maker in the market. Monopoly can only be achieved if the product is unique in nature. Therefore, it is assumed that the in monopoly market the firm is selling a unique product. There are barriers to entry in the market. Under monopoly, only one firm can operate in the market. This is due to the ownership of scarce factor, patents, copyrights etc. A monopolist has access to the specialized information, which is not available to others. This information is about the patents, government contracts and the trademarks. Revenue and Demand under monopoly: According to Baumol and Blinder (2015) as there is a single seller in the market, the monopolists demand curve is a negatively sloped demand curve. The market demand curve is represented by the demand curve of the monopolist. As depicted in the figure below, the upper curve (DD) is representing the demand curve faced by the monopolist. On the other hand, the curve lying below is representing the marginal revenue curve of the monopolist. Figure 1: Demand curve and Marginal Revenue curve of the Monopolist (Source: Created by Author) As the monopolist is the price maker in the market the demand curve of the monopolist slopes downward. Therefore, it is evident that to sell a higher amount of products, the monopolist will have to decrease the price of its product. This is responsible for generating lesser and lesser amount of marginal revenue (Moulin 2014). This means that the revenue gained by selling an extra amount of output is less than that of the price. The short run equilibrium analysis of the monopolist firm helps to gain a better insight about the efficiency and inefficiency of the firm. The problem before the monopolist firm is to maximize profit. Therefore, the firm will definitely choose to operate at the point where the quantity of output produced generates the highest level of profit possible, given that the price level, demand, cost structure and level of production remain the same. Figure 2: Monopoly Equilibrium (Short-Run) (Source: Created by Author) The short run equilibrium of the monopolist is depicted by the figure above. At the top panel of the figure, the total cost curve and the total revenue curve of the monopoly is depicted. The total revenue curve is hump shaped as the price level depends on the level of quantity demanded. In this case at first total revenue will increase but in the later stage it will rise at a lower rate (Washington 2013). The red line depicts the total cost curve. Therefore, the upper panel of the diagram has presented the cost as well as revenue of the monopolist. The dotted red line represents the difference between these two, which is the level of profit. This represented in the lower panel by the inverted-U shaped curve, the monopolist will be in equilibrium where the level of profit is highest. That is at the point Q. Macroeconomic Theory: Here the IS-LM model is the chosen macroeconomic theory in this assignment. The basic understanding of the model will help to analyze the some key macroeconomic factors such as the rate of interest, savings, investment and money supply. IS-LM Model: The IS-LM model is one of the most popular concepts in macroeconomics. It represents two curves graphically that intersect each other. The IS curve also known as the Investment-savings represents all the combinations of income (Y ) and rate of interest (r) for which the commodity market will be in equilibrium. This means that, IS curve represents the set of Y and r for which the total demand for a given level of income and the total cost of borrowing e must be equal to the total amount of supply (Mankiw 2014). Yd(Y, r) = Y As according to the national income accounting identity, the quantity supplied yields the same amount of income. Therefore, in the equation above the Y in the left hand side represents the total demand while in the right hand side represents the quantity supplied. LM Curve: According to Scarth (2014), the LM curve represents all the possible combinations of income (Y) and rate of interest (r) for which the money market will be in equilibrium. The LM curve is upward rising this is because with the increase in the level of output the demand of money will rise then the interest rate is required increase in order to lower the demand of money to the initial equilibrium level. The equilibrium condition in the money market is represented by the equation, Md (Y, r) = M/P From the equation above, it can be stated that the right hand side of the equation represents the real money supply. A change in the real money supply will shift the entire curve ((McDonald 2012). Figure 3: IS-LM equilibrium (Source: Created by Author) Therefore, where the IS curve intersects the LM curve, the equilibrium income level and interest rate is determined, for which the money market as well as the commodity market will be in equilibrium (Tinkler and Woods 2013). How lower interest rate has affected the British economy: With a significantly low interest rate, the cost associated with borrowing will also be low. This will in turn indulge people to raise their spending rather than increasing investment (Kamenica 2012). This results in an increase in the amount of the aggregate demand along with the economic growth. However, in increase in the level of aggregate demand may also lead to cause inflationary pressure. With a lower rate of interest, people will receive fewer incentives for savings and thereby people will spend more and save less. In such a situation, people can borrow more as the cost of borrowing is low (Backhouse and Boianovsky 2014). This as a result will give rise to a situation when the people will not be able to repay the debts. The Central Bank of England is expected to raise the supply of money in the economy. The bank can also control the situation by raising the cash reserve ratio with the banks, so that the banks could not lend more to the people. Conclusion: In order to conclude it can be said that the report has successfully focused on the two key economic models. The monopoly market structure however, may be rare to experience in the real life, but it presents a clear outline of the concerned market. On the other hand, the IS-LM model will help to get a better insight about the key operability of the money market variables such as money demand and money supply etc. Therefore, as a concluding note it can be stated that the objective of the assignment has become successful. Bradstreet Feminism Essays - Gender Studies, Gender, Anne Bradstreet

Bradstreet Feminism Essays - Gender Studies, Gender, Anne Bradstreet Bradstreet Feminism As a female in a highly patriarchal society, Anne Bradstreet uses the reverse psychology technique to prove the point of her belief of unfair and unequal treatment of women in her community. Women who wrote stepped outside their appropriate sphere, and those who actually published their work frequently faced social censure. Compounding this social pressure, many women faced crushing workloads and struggled with lack of leisure for writing. Others suffered from an unequal access to education, while others were dealing with the sense of intellectual inferiority offered to them from virtually every authoritative voice, that voice usually being male. Bradstreet was raised in an influential family, receiving an extensive education with access to private tutors and the Earl of Lincoln's large library. She was part of an influential family who encouraged her writing and circulated it in manuscript with pride. That kind of private support did much to offset the possibility of public disappro val. Bradstreet believed that women in her society were treated unfairly, and that gender should be insignificant. In her Prologue she addresses conflict and struggle, expressing her opinion toward women's rights, implying that gender is unimportant and male dominance is wrong. Bradstreet asserts the rights of women to learning and expression of thought, addressing broad and universal themes. The Prologue has a humble tone with slightly hidden surprises, containing a muted declaration of independence from the past and a challenge to male authority. Bradstreet also uses a rather apologetic tone to draw in the reader so that they will form an interest in her writing despite her gender. In the beginning she refers to wars, captains, and epics, written specifically by male writers, worrying that her poems will shame the art of poetry. Continuing her self-demotion with an apologetic tone she talks about the Great Bartas, admiring his works, and sarcastically admitting that she will never be as talented as he is. The sarcastic tone of these lines cause the typical reader to reconsider that maybe women are not as bad as she portrays them to be, which is exactly what she has schemed for the reader to think. Continuing, Bradstreet mentions regret for her lack of skill, in which she laments the fact that A weak or wounded brain admits no cure (stanza 4, line 24). As the reading progresses, she discusses the prejudice against women, knowing that if she expresses her true feelings, no one will look at her poem. Stanza 5, lines 25-30 implies that she despises anyone who thinks that women are better as housewives, and that if their work proves well, men will say it is stolen or is by chance, explaining unfair treatment of women. Following, she mentions the Greeks as appreciative of women, blaming the current society for the manipulation of women. She laments that the Greeks had fewer arguments on women's rights and were more peaceful, contrasting it with the current values of society, namely that the Greeks are wrong and women are inferior. Bradstreet uses sarcasm to express her emotions toward the male dominant society, saying that men are eternally correct, and women are inferior to them. She sarcastically says that men are better than women, implying the exact opposite, that women are in fact, equal in ability. She ends by stating that she does not think her work is worth a critic's time, telling us that although she thinks women are not inferior, she cannot do anything about it, and that her works making men's glist'ring gold [work] but more to shine. Bradstreet was a very gifted and talented poet, recording early stirrings of female resistance to a social and religious system that was prevalent at the time. She used different tones, moods, and sarcasm to bring her poetry to life, giving a vivid, clearly worded image of what she wants her reader to know, a strikingly radical notion that her writing could be as competent as any male's. Although much of her work was conventional puritan poetry, it shows a sensitivity to beauty that male writers of the time lacked.

A Comparison Of Machiavelli And Hobbes Politics Essay

A Comparison Of Machiavelli And Hobbes Politics Essay Machiavelli and Hobbes were the most important political philosophers of early modernity. Politically, modernitys earliest phase starts with  Niccolà ³ Machiavellis works which openly rejected the medieval and Aristotelian style of analyzing politics by comparison ideas about how things should be, in favor of realistic analysis of how things really are. He also proposed that an aim of politics is to control one’s own chance or fortune, and that relying upon providence actually leads to evil. Machiavelli argued, for example, that violent divisions within political communities are unavoidable, but can also be a source of strength which law-makers and leaders should account for and even encourage in some ways.   [ 1 ]    Machiavelli’s recommendations were sometimes influential upon kings and princes, but eventually came to be seen as favoring free republics over monarchies. Machiavelli in turn influenced  Francis Bacon,  Marchamont Needham,  Harrington,  Jo hn Milton,  David Hume, and many others.   [ 2 ]    Important modern political doctrines which stem from the new Machiavellian realism include  Mandeville’s influential proposal that â€Å"Private Vices by the dexterous Management of a skilful Politician may be turned into Public Benefits† (the last sentence of his  Fable of the Bees), and also the doctrine of a constitutional â€Å"separation of powers† in government, first clearly proposed by  Montesquieu. Both these principles are enshrined within the  constitutions  of most  modern democracies. It has been observed that while Machiavelli’s realism saw a value to war and political violence, his lasting influence has been â€Å"tamed† so that useful conflict was deliberately converted as much as possible to formalized political struggles and the economic â€Å"conflict† encouraged between free, private enterprises.   [ 3 ]    As I said in the first paragraph of this e ssay I will start with  Thomas Hobbes, attempts were made to use the methods of the new modern physical sciences, as proposed by  Bacon  and  Descartes, applied to humanity and politics. Notable attempts to improve upon the methodological approach of Hobbes include those of  Locke,  Spinoza,  Giambattista Vico  and Rousseau.  David Hume  made what he considered to be the first proper attempt at trying to apply Bacon’s scientific method to political subjects, rejecting some aspects of the approach of Hobbes.   [ 4 ]    Modernist republicanism openly influenced the foundation of republics during the  Dutch Revolt  (1568-1609),  English Civil War  (1642-1651),  American Revolution  (1775-1783) and the  French Revolution  (1789-1799 A second phase of modernist political thinking begins with Rousseau, who questioned the natural rationality and sociality of humanity and proposed that  human nature  was much more malleable than had been pr eviously thought. By this logic, what makes a good political system or a good man is completely dependent upon the chance path whole person has taken over history. This thought influenced the political (and aesthetic) thinking of  Immanuel Kant,  Edmund Burke  and others and led to a critical review of modernist politics. On the conservative side, Burke argued that this understanding encouraged caution and avoidance of radical change. However more ambitious movements also developed from this insight into human  culture, initially  Romanticism  and  Historicism, and eventually both the  Communism  of  Karl Marx, and the modern forms of  nationalism  inspired by the  French Revolution, including, in one extreme, the German  Nazi  movement.

Porters generic strategies for Glaxo Smith Kline Essay

Porters generic strategies for Glaxo Smith Kline - Essay Example With a higher value, consumers will most likely be ready to pay an extra price, giving the firm a competitive advantage over other firms. Porter also identified the focus strategy whereby a firm concentrates on a particular segment in the market whereby it may have an advantage in regard to the cost or differentiation of products (Porter, 1998). This paper presents the application of Porter’s generic strategies in GlaxoSmithKline, which is a pharmaceutical company offering a variety of products for treatment of various diseases. Differentiation strategy is highlighted as the mostly commonly used strategy, although the organization uses the cost leadership strategy. The differentiation and cost leadership strategies are applied by the organization to maintain its competitiveness. The organization is usually involved in market research to ensure that it satisfies a wide range of consumers with various illnesses such as; asthma, diabetes, cancer and heart problems among many other pharmaceutical products that are essential for severe ailments. The firm also produces vaccines that are essential for protecting healthy people from severe diseases such as hepatitis and tetanus among others. Consumers are also provided with healthcare products that they can readily access from the shops for their day to day uses. These include painkillers such as panadol and hygienic products such as aquafresh tooth paste. Lucozade is also an energy drink that is used globally (Chandon, 2004). The differentiation strategy of GlaxoSmithKline significantly helps in maintaining profitability in the highly competitive pharmaceutical industry. The firm’s products are of unique quality and consumers attach a high value to them. This is mainly as a result of the perception that the firm possesses the capacity of offering most of the highly needed pharmaceutical products. The highly

Healing Myth Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Healing Myth - Essay Example She spent five years stuck in tortuous dread, trying to outrun destruction, war, starvation and the ultimate commitment of an individual, the death. She challenged inhuman evil acts as if they were kindergarten toys. According to me the turning point in the story can be found when children’s mother turns them out of the home. She whispers to the children and Loung writes (2006) â€Å"If we stay together, we will die together, but if they cannot find us, they cannot kill us† (p.121). She instructs them to separate, â€Å"walk until you come to a work camp, tell them you are orphans, and change your name† (p.122). Loung stubbornly refuses to go so â€Å"Ma says sternly. ‘Your Pa is gone now, and I just cannot take care of you kids. I don’t want you here! You are too much work for me! I want you to leave!† (p.122).As the wife of a high ranking government official, her strategy was right and the children were saved but she lost sight of the human angle at that moment. That was a peculiar situation and in the situations they were placed in neither mother nor the children could be blamed. The wise saying goes that desperate situations need desperate remedies. In such a grim situation thinking power gets engulfed in confusion and no accurate decision is possible. It is wrong to conclude that the mother does not love her children. The reality is she visualizes absolute danger for their lives if they continue to stay in the house together and as such she wants them to leave hoping that destiny would favor w them with good luck if they move out of the house and seek shelter elsewhere. Loung’s position is also to be pitied. Her resentment towards her mother is perfect as children look forward for protection from their parents and family members when it is a question of life or death. What is their plan of escape and where will they hide? Neither the

Creatine for Athletic Performance Essay -- Drugs Sports

Creatine for Athletic Performance The Advantages of Creatine for Enhancing Athletic Performance If, about 5 years ago, you were to tell an athlete there was a supplement (which was not an anabolic steroid or other bodybuilding drug) that would help bodybuilders and athletes pack on as much as 10 rock-hard pounds of muscular bodyweight (which could lead to better performance for athletes) in less then 2 weeks; increase their bench press by 25 lbs. (which also would help in enhancing performance) in a mere 10 days; "get a pump like you were loaded on Dianabol"(Phillips 48) (a pump that last for hours and hours which helps in muscle development); and, all the while, help you run faster, jump higher, recover from exercise more quickly, they would probably tell you to get lost. Well all these facts and more have now been proven to be effective on athletes. "Creatine is the safest, most effective supplement out on the market today," says Ron Terjung, a physiology professor at the University of Missouri. Millions of men are buying the dietary supplement, hoping it is the magic pill that can transform them from scrawny to brawny. Creatine has made a strong impact on the athletic world giving many an edge on the competition and enhancing athletic performance. The discovery of Creatine leads back to 1832. A French scientist named Chevreul, identified a naturally occurring organic compound in meat and then was later found to be manufactured by the liver, kidneys and pancreas using three amino acids. The scientist named the compound Creatine after the greek word for flesh(Phillips 8). Creatine is a compound that is naturally made in our bodies to supply energy to our muscles. It is an energy rich metabolite that is found mainly in muscle tissue. It is responsible for supplying the muscle with energy during exercise. Chemically, it is called Methylguanido-acid. Creatine is formed from the three amino acids, argentine, methionine, and glycogen that undergo a chemical process to form Creat ine. Creatine is manufactured in the liver and may be produced in the pancreas and kidneys. It is transported through the blood and taken up by muscle cell, where it is converted into Creatine phosphate; also called phosphocreatine. This reaction involves the enzyme Creatine kinase that helps bond Creatine to a high-energy phosphate group. Once Creatine is bound to ... ...rcise." How to Reduce Stress

1. In today's smaller Air Force, members are finding themselves doing more with less. This in-turn has caused numerous stressful situations on and off duty. It is incumbent for Air Force members to recognize, treat, and eliminate stress whenever practical to increase morale and mission accomplishment. This paper will cover the emotional, behavioral, and physical signs of stress as well as importance of job stress management in treating and/or eliminating stress. 2. Before we can begin to reduce stress, we must be able to recognize indicators that lead to or help identify stress. Air Force psychologist Capt. Neil S. Hibler has developed a list of early warning signs (2:19). For our purposes we will discuss only a couple from each category. First, from the emotional category, is apathy. Apathy is the doldrums. Things you normally enjoy are no longer pleasurable. Along with apathy is mental fatigue. Being unable to concentrate or staying focus are only a couple of examples of mental fatigue. Emotional signs are very important to recognize, because if they are not noticed early on and addressed, behavioral or even physical problems can surface. The behavioral category signs include: being late to work, poor appearance, and being accident prone are just a few examples of administrative problems. Legal problems are even more evident, such as, traffic tickets, indebtedness, and inability to control violent impulses. As you can see, these signs of stress become more serious the longer TSgt Adams/H-Flt/0805/pfa/19 Jul 97 they go untreated or reduced. Finally, is the physical category; possibly the most serious of all. Stress not only effects the psyche of an individual, but the physical side of ones' being can also be altered. Ailments such as: headaches, insomnia, nausea, changes in appetite, and sexual problems can persist during times of stress. The individual may seek relief from stress by self-medicating and develop a dependence on chemicals that are harmful to the body. These signs are just a few of the more recognizable. Other signs can be very subtle and even more dangerous to the individual and others. This is why it is paramount to detect stress early and if possible treat, reduce, or eliminate before damage is done. 3. Once signs of stress are identified, it is time to tackle them with a few job stress management techniques outlined in â€Å"The Relaxation & Stress Reduction Handbook† (2:211). A 1985 study conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics found that more than 50% of workers surveyed experienced moderate to heavy stress on the job. To effectively combat work-related stress, you first need to identify symptoms and sources of job related stress. This can be accomplished by taking and scoring the survey in the handbook. Next, you need to keep a log on how you respond to your specific job stressors. Label four columns: stressor, feelings, thoughts, and behavior. After you have completed these task, setting goals and motivation is next. Set goals to respond more effectively to your job stressors. Develop a plan to react to stress you can anticipate or even avoid altogether. The idea here is to gain more control of your work environment. Rewards are a very important part of motivation. Create a specific reward for every goal you establish and make sure to give yourself the time to enjoy your reward. The next area to consider is more difficult for most of us. Dealing with your boss, negotiating with co- workers, and changing your thinking can be used to your advantage to help reduce stress. Don't side step these ideas, use them! The last two strategies to consider in job stress management are; pace and balance yourself, and know when to quit. Pace at your own tempo. Don't burn yourself out. This is one of the leading causes of stress at work. To effectively integrate job stress management into your daily lifestyle could take months, in just a day you can identify your job stressors and your responses to them. Getting started is the key! 4. We have discussed identifying stress by looking for: emotional, behavioral, and physical signs of stress. Then, more importantly, we discussed ways to: treat, reduce, or eliminate stress by applying techniques used in job stress management. Job stress accounts for billions of dollars lost annually in productivity, wages, and medical bills. Americans now know that job stress management makes personal and financial sense.

Italian Christmas Traditions and Customs

During Christmastime, one readily observable difference between Italy and the United States, for instance, is the lack of crass commercialism that threatens to swallow up and completely secularize the holiday. For instance, instead of writing letters to Santa Claus asking for presents (or, in the digital age,  e-mailing Santa Claus), Italian children write letters to tell their parents how much they love them. The letter is normally placed under their fathers plate and read after Christmas Eve dinner has been finished. Italians have also adopted some of the  northern European traditions  as well. Nowadays, especially in northern Italy, a fair number of families decorate an evergreen tree in their home. Here are some other rituals, customs, and traditions practiced by Italians during the Christmas holidays: Ceppo: The  ceppo  is a wooden frame several feet high designed in a pyramid shape. This frame supports several tiers of shelves, often with a manger scene on the bottom followed by small gifts of fruit, candy, and presents on the shelves above. The Tree of Light, as it is also know, is entirely decorated with colored paper, gilt pinecones, and miniature colored pennants. Small candles are fastened to the tapering sides and a star or small doll is hung at the apex. Urn of Fate: An old tradition in Italy calls for each member of the family to take turns drawing a wrapped gift out of a large ornamental bowl until all the presents are distributed. Zampognari and Pifferai: In Rome and surrounding areas bagpipers and flute players, in traditional colorful costumes of sheepskin vests, knee-high breeches, white stockings and long dark cloaks, travel from their homes in the Abruzzi mountains to entertain crowds of people at religious shrines. La Befana:  Kindly old witch  who brings children toys on the Feast of the Epiphany, January 6. According to the legend of la Befana, the Three Wise Men stopped at her hut to ask directions on their way to Bethlehem and to invite her to join them. She refused, and later a shepherd asked her to join him in paying respect to the Christ Child. Again she refused, and when night fell she saw a great light in the skies. La Befana thought perhaps she should have gone with the Three Wise Men, so she gathered some toys that had belonged to her own child, who had died, and ran to find the kings and the shepherd. But la Befana could not find them or the stable. Now, each year she looks for the Christ Child. Since she cannot find him, she leaves gifts for the children of Italy and pieces of coal (nowadays  carbone dolce, a rock candy that looks remarkably like coal) for the bad ones. Holiday Season: On the Italian holiday calendar December 25 isnt the only special day. Throughout December and January there are a number of religious holidays to mark the season. DECEMBER 6: La Festa di San Nicola - The festival in honor of St. Nicholas, the patron saint of shepherds, is celebrated in towns such as Pollutri with the lighting of fires under enormous cauldrons, in which  fave  (broad beans) are cooked, then eaten ceremoniously. DECEMBER 8: LImmacolata Concezione - celebration of the Immaculate Conception DECEMBER 13: La Festa di Santa Lucia - St. Lucys Day DECEMBER 24: La Vigilia di Natale - Christmas Eve DECEMBER 25: Natale - Christmas DECEMBER 26: La Festa di Santo Stefano - St. Stephens Day marks the announcement of the birth of Jesus and the arrival of the Three Wise Men DECEMBER 31: La Festa di San Silvestro - New Years Eve JANUARY 1: Il Capodanno - New Years Day JANUARY 6: La Festa dellEpifania - The Epiphany
